Red meat might be delicious, but not as nutritious

As you prepare your family's Fourth of July menu, consider this.

Researchers have found a potential link between eating too much red meat and developing Type 2 diabetes.

The researchers tracked a group of people's meat-eating habits and found that people who started eating more red meat saw an almost 50 percent increased risk in developing diabetes.

Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy.

When you have type 2 diabetes, your fat, liver and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. This is called insulin resistance. As a result, blood sugar does not get into these cells to be stored for energy.

The number of Oklahomans with diabetes has grown steadily over the last 10 years

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Oklahoma. About one in every five Oklahomans 65 and older have been diagnosed with diabetes.
